Diesel Witch

Diesel Witch is a 3 piece surf/punk rock band based in the Norther suburbs of Adelaide. Forming in 2007, the current line up consists of Chris Busbridge (guitar/vocals/drums), Luke Willis (guitar/vocals/drums), and Jack Smith (bass).
The first 6 months were spent by Willis and Busbridge battling through blisteringly hot rehearsals in small cramped rooms, desperately trying to get some songs together and hopefully finding a bass player… one day… one day… and then one day they did.
The bands first release was a 7 seven track demo entitled "The Seaweed Sessions", named after the pungent smell of seaweed that engulfed the studio. After months of shows, the band finally saved up enough money to record their first studio quality recording, entitled "Late Night Excursions and Hard Adventures”, which appeared at 74 in the 3D Radio top 101. The band informally joined the independent label Wholesale Meat Music in mid 2009 and have just finished recording their new 6 track Surf instrumental EP called “Surfedelica” which will be released in the near future.

Huckleberry Swedes
Hear them live - The Range
Tuesday September 8, 4pm
Ride that ‘Huckleberry Steamboat' and roll down the river from the banjo plucking snow capped mountains to the sea, snaking through the dry, dusty mallee scrub, the sun soaked towns where dirt road drifters seek the shade and the tarmac haze rises like a ritualised prayer to the rain gods!
Songs from an over idealistic imagining, from another time - about the love of fishing, pies, and sweethearts, songs of protest, underdog anthems and melancholic musings baked in a crust of roots, rock, folk, soul, and Americana.
Huckleberry Swedes, are a five piece featuring BJ Barker on drums, Sam Willoughby on bass/vocals, Richard "The Judge" Coates keyboards/accordion, Mark Elberg on guitars/banjo/mandolin/vocals and Troy Loakes on vocals/guitar.

Hybrid Illusion
Hear them live - The Angry Hour
Monday September 7, 11pm
HYBRID ILLUSION is a hard hitting Progressive-Thrash Metal band formed in Adelaide, South Australia. Forged from the talents of Nick Curtis (Lead Guitar), Tom Gleeson (Drums), Alex N (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar) and Ryan Galbraith (Bass), the band has been tremendously popular in its local region, performing its first show a mere 6 months after creation and recording its debut EP only 2 weeks after Ryan joined the band in 2006. Hybrid played a total of 22 gigs within 16 months of its first performance, an average of 1.4 gigs a month. Recently, the band held a logo design contest and among the many entrants the winner was Stephen Dorsey from Nebraska, USA.
Hybrid’s music is easily described as old-school thrash with a modern twist which is applied by adding in riffs, ideas and elements from other genres. Rather than sticking to a specific steel frame work of the thrash genre, Hybrid prefers to make kick ass music that sounds good, rather than songs that fit a certain genre or mould. This general principle is then executed by crack musicians.

Imants Cielens
Hear them live - Prime Time Jazz
Thursday September 10, 7pm
"FrEempt is a vehicle for expression of ideas and music started by Imants Cielens. As the name suggests the philosophy behind such an experience is one of questioning boundaries and freedoms. As there are no real rules to music there are no real definitions to what you can expect from this platform of expression. With influences ranging from Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Latin Jazz, we never know whats going to come out in the mix. The members of the band in it's current incarnation are Imants Cielens on Saxophones, Steven Neville on Drums, Jakub Tengdahl on Keys. All have been active in study and performance through the Elder Conservatorium here in Adelaide. This music is not about playing to achieve a definition it is about playing to achieve something beyond definition."

Jude Elliot
Hear them live - Break It Down
Wednesday September 9, 11pm
"An eclectic fusion of voice, strings, percussion, piano and guitar is on show from Jude Elliot on her debut LP Gentle Glimpse Of Waking. Such a title is rather fitting to the album as Elliot's voice careens gently over light guitar lines, whispering eloquent poetry rather than prose. The ethereal pop created by Elliot is further enhanced by her decision to use both multi-tracking and live recording techniques. The use of both strategies enhances the aural atmosphere, ensuring that while the recording is crispy and clear, the organic life of the recording is given room to grow."

Liv Watson
Hear them live - The Folk Show
Saturday September 12, 5pm
It's taken me awhile to reach this point, but when people ask me what I do for a living now, I'm finally able to use the word "musician" with less hesitance and trepidation. At the age of 24, I think I'm ready to call myself a retired journalist (after just a couple of years in this line of work) who makes coffees for a living and makes music for fun. After a 12-month European adventure last year – during which I was asked countless times “what I was passionate about” – I realised the answer was music. So, for the past year or so, I’ve been dabbling in the world of music-making and gigging, playing regularly at pubs and cafes through to parties, country footy clubs and at my church. A self-taught guitarist and singer, I’ve not taken for granted the 12-odd years of classical violin training through my school years – string riffs feature in several of my tunes. I love to create fresh, catchy songs with layers of harmonies, as well as lyrics that tell stories about my experiences and the world around me.

Outhouse Orchestra
Hear them live - Roundabout
Wednesday September 9, 1pm
The quartet has taken South Australian born but now European-based singer songwriter, Ronnie Taheny’s originals and arranged them for voice, cello, flute, harmonica, piano, guitar, percussion, drums, a fair bit of irreverence and your refined ear. At last, a fresh sound in contemporary songs. Think enthusiasm, irreverence and energy not stodgy classical deliveries. Beneath their larrikin exterior there beats four hearts of sheer class, arse, talent and shameless glamour. So come on, give the gift that gives once – to them. They’ll toast your generosity from a stage in Europe somewhere soon.

Pablo Libido & the Wild Robots
Hear them live - Songcatcher
Monday September 7, 9pm
Pablo "Libido" & the Wild Robots is the Adelaide electronic music project of John Pablo Lattin - playing guitar and singing original songs, backed by drums, bass and synths. They performed their debut shows for 2009 Fringe festival, and since then have been playing around Adelaide venues including the Grace Emily Hotel, the Metropolitan Hotel, the Jade Monkey as well as some live-to-air radio performances. Pablo is presently adding new (human) musicians into the lineup – recent shows have featured a trumpet player, a conga player, and a dancing maracas player – volunteers are welcomed. Paraphrasing a review by Spoz: 'We see people just like him playing in shopping centres, country fairs, chook raffles, and political rallies. Pablo Libido is both astoundingly brilliant and utterly horrendous in equal measure, he takes a stage by its throat, he treats a live set like a hostage situation and with a shrill singing voice as powerfully emotional and its jarringly off key he will spit, howl and shriek and make you feel every one his songs as your intestines twist into knots. Imagine something akin to a standup comedy routine, a children's television show and cruise ship performer and you'd barely cover half of it. You'll laugh and you'll cry.'

Samuel Bester
Hear them live - Breakfast with Peter Godfrey
Thursday September 10, 8am
Samuel Bester, troubadour, a singer-songwriter with roots influences. His lyrics speak of the human condition, political, personal and other stories from life. Often daring to delve into the deep, yet carrying an underlying positive message - one that reflects Samuel’s own determination for better living. His influences are varied. As an indication, if you think of the folk/pop sensibilities of Cat Stevens, lyrical life observations of Bob Dillon, the fresh roots sound of Donavon Frankenreiter and compositional diversity of Ben Harper, then you’re getting warmer. A Samuel Bester show is a warm affair, drawing the listener to be involved spiritually in the music. Performing with his beautiful voice, a selection of acoustic guitars from twelve string to open tunings, spiced with harmonica, and a stomp box to boot (no pun intended), his catchy songs entrance you into their web. Indeed, many of his songs will have the audience singing along by the second chorus! Expect a journey, from twelve string plectrum picked folk to six string swing jazz, political country sing along to foot stomping swampy blues.

South African Choir
Hear them live - The Range
Thursday September 10, 4pm
The South Africa choir was formed in FEBRUARY 2009. It was formed by a group of South African immigrants who would normally come together on Saturdays to discuss their social problems. As most were homesick and missing their relatives and loved ones, it became apparent that singing South African songs might help to overcome such boredom. The singing started in the backyard by four people and as time went more people became interested and join. After two weeks of singing we were invited to sing in a church service and people liked our music. From that point the choir was invited every week in various events including performance at Convention Centre when premier Mike Rann was addressing the African communities.

The Baker Suite
Hear them live - Jazz on the Terrace
Monday September 7, noon
THE BAKER SUITE: Straight from the heart and reminiscent of a smoky, French cafe. Guitarist & vocalist John Baker and accordionist Gayle Buckby create a seductive and potent world with songs influenced by a background in jazz but with Latin, European and contemporary folk elements. Playing as a Sextet at larger gigs, the full band includes the addition of double bass, piano, viola and percussion. The British Robots
Hear them live - Represent
Tuesday September 8, 6pm
We are The British Robots. We write pop songs. We trade instruments on stage. We’re about melodies and harmonies in smallish rooms with green tea. We've been together for a little over two years, living and playing around Adelaide. We’ve made lots of friends and had a busy year. We earned second in South Australia for 2008’s National Campus Band Competition. We plastered posters around the city for Adelaide’s short-lived Popsicle collective. Our single, Trickster, was featured in the upcoming film Coffin Rock, which we played in. Brisbane's Rave Magazine quizzed us about our genre juggling. We’ve been lugging around this huge recording device. We’ve been laying down tracks in Chapel Lane Studios. We’ve been driving up the A1 highway to mix with Cat and Chris from Explosion Proof Motor. All this work will soon manifest in our self titled debut EP.

The Fiddle Chicks
Hear them live - Piping Strike Hour
Friday September 11, 11am
'The Chicks' are attracting growing numbers of followers, with overflowing venues and tremendous support for their CDs, Don't Worry About Brucie and Out The Window Over The Gate. Is it because of their wit and humour? Or their unusual fiddle playing tricks? The diversity of musical styles they write and arrange? Their recent APRA award? The lack of guitars? Maybe it’s their talent and energy on stage? Probably the nice hats have helped too!

The Melodics
Hear them live - Arts Breakfast
Saturday September 12, 9am
It was during a self-imposed isolation in desolate country Victoria, that five creatively charged musos found themselves connecting within a realm of experimentation. They stumbled across something special; a driving punk-like shuffle with a rocking bass line and hard skanking synths. One of the band’s vocalists started rapping over the groove about outer space and the desire to re-unite with his half brother Chewbacca...
Mixing these influences with a love for modern Electro and Hip-Hop has resulted in an electric album, full of bright drive and attitude, sharp quirky vocals and a lush production featuring strings, horns, synths, mandolin, recorders, and other obscure instrumentation.

Todd Sibbin and the Opposite Ends
Hear them live - Breakfast with Peter Godfrey
Friday September 11, 8am
After gaining notoriety around Adelaide as a remarkable and energetic solo instrumentalist, Todd Sibbin teamed up with rock’n’roll child Tom Krieg (of Battery Kids fame) and avant-garde violinist Tom Capogreco (Behind These Walls, Oh My Guard!) to help propel his repertoire of stomping songs at unsuspecting audiences all around Australia. The result is a mixture of front-porch roots and high velocity riffage kept honest with vocals and lyrics whose vulnerability is reminiscent of Conor Oberst and the ilk. On stage, with either a banjo or an open tuned 12-string guitar, a violin and a double bass, these guys are absolutely blitzing
